Secondary Education: Communication and English Language Arts

Share your love of reading, writing, and language with students.

Within our secondary education major, our communication and English language arts licensure program prepares you to pursue Minnesota licensure, enabling you to teach English at the middle or high school level (5-12).

We prioritize real-world experiences that blend coursework with hands-on learning, setting the stage for your success in the classroom. This approach provides firsthand knowledge of crucial aspects of teaching, including working with diverse students and families, fostering confidence, and building competency in your teaching skills.

The curriculum encompasses courses in American and world literature, literary analysis and criticism, and rhetoric. Dive into the works of Shakespeare, explore the ethical dimensions of public communication, investigate the technical development and social impact of mass media, and learn how to use public speaking to be a voice for the voiceless. By delving into both traditional and modern communication, you’ll be well-equipped to teach students how each influences daily life and the world.

At Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, our teaching firmly rests on Lasallian Catholic values. These values form the cornerstone of our commitment to providing a quality education that emphasizes service, inclusivity, and respect for others. We empower you to seamlessly integrate these values into your role as a teacher, influencing your classroom dynamics, personal relationships, and interactions with the world.

Join us on the Winona Campus and cultivate your love of reading, writing, speaking, and listening — and your knowledge and skills in media literacy, literature, and drama — to teach and inspire middle and high school students.
